Syphilis Testing and Treatment - Houston Health Department

Image
What are the signs and symptoms of syphilis? There are four stages of syphilis (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). Each stage has different signs and symptoms. Primary Stage During the first (primary) stage of syphilis, you may notice a single sore or multiple sores. The sore is the location where syphilis entered your body.  These sores usually occur in, on, or around the penis vagina anus rectum lips or in the mouth Sores are usually (but not always) firm, round, and painless. Because the sore is painless, you may not notice it. The sore usually lasts 3 to 6 weeks and heals regardless of whether you receive treatment. Even after the sore goes away, you must still receive treatment. This will stop your infection from moving to the secondary stage. Secondary Stage During the secondary stage, you may have skin rashes and/or sores in your mouth, vagina, or anus. This stage usually starts with a rash on one or more areas of your body. The rash can sh...

Why do cold sores keep coming back? - Nebraska Medicine

Image
Cold sores are painful blisters in or around the mouth. These sores are a marker of the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which comes in two forms, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Anyone with either type of HSV is at risk of developing cold sores, but type one is most often responsible. According to the World Health Organization, about two out of three people under 50 have HSV-1. So, despite whatever stigma HSV has, it's important to remember this virus is extremely common and nothing to be embarrassed about. With proper medical attention, it's relatively easy to effectively treat and limit HSV's effects, including cold sores. What are cold sores? Cold sores are small, fluid-filled blisters, usually around the lips and in the mouth. Because there's no known cure for HSV, the virus that causes cold sores, it will remain in your body for the rest of your life. "It's generally a virus that lays dormant and then can be reactivated at times," says Zachary Genant...

How Contagious Is HSV-1 Genitally? - Verywell Health

The virus that causes cold sores—herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)—also causes a third of genital herpes cases. HSV-1 is contagious and can be passed orally and genitally, either from mouth to mouth, genitals to genitals, mouth to genitals, or genitals to mouth. That means that you can get genital herpes if someone with a cold sore performs oral sex on you. And, that's a concern given that nearly half of the U.S. population has HSV-1, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This article explains how you can get genital herpes from a cold sore and vice versa. It also details how herpes can spread through oral sex and offers tips to prevent herpes transmission. ancoay / Getty Images Key Facts Genital herpes is an incurable infection caused both by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). New HPV test crucial step for eradicating cervical cancer - DW (English)

A new affordable, point-of-care test has been developed that can detect evidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) — a leading cause of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is almost always caused by an infection with certain strains of HPV. But high medical costs and infrastructure barriers have prevented wider access to screening and treatments. A new study, published on Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine, shows how the HPV test can be performed in 45 minutes and will cost as little as $5 (€4.6) per test. The test's ease of use and low cost could enable it to fill critical gaps in cervical cancer screening in developing countries, where HPV infections often go undetected. Cervical cancer is not being prevented Cervical cancer is a story of the success and failure of science. It is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, yet 600,000 women a year are diagnosed with cervical cancer, while 350,000 women a year die of the disease. According t...

New confidential and fast STD testing center comes to Reno - KOLO

Image
RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - A new center designed to test for sexually transmitted diseases called the Henderson Wellness Clinic is at 65 Regency Way, STE B in Reno and is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It's called the Henderson Wellness Clinic because of its first location in southern Nevada. The nonprofit responsible for funding the Clinic and its services is moving to northern Nevada because the Silver State is ranked 4th in the nation for the highest number of people with STDs. The lack of STD testing centers in the state plays a major factor in this high ranking, says Henderson Wellness Clinic Executive Director, Chris Davin. He says there are only two other STD testing centers in northern Nevada. HIV results are available in one minute. Syphilis and hepatitis C results take 20 minutes. Chlamydia and gonorrhea results take 32 minutes. "What we've learned about them is that they are comprehensive, they are quick, and they are confidential. So, they c...
