NHS trust criticised over deaths of new mothers from herpes - The Guardian

Image
A coroner has criticised an NHS trust over the deaths of two new mothers with herpes. Kimberley Sampson, 29, and Samantha Mulcahy, 32, died in 2018 after having caesarean sections six weeks apart by the same surgeon at hospitals in Kent. Their families have been waiting five years for answers on how they came to be infected with the virus, which can cause sores around the mouth or genitals. Catherine Wood, Mid Kent and Medway coroner, said Sampson could have been given an anti-viral treatment sooner. Wood added that in Mulcahy's case "suspicion should have been raised" given the knowledge among staff from Sampson's earlier death. At the inquest hearing at Kent County Hall in Maidstone on Friday, Wood said: "The earlier treatment is given, the better the outcome." The coroner ruled out human culpability of any of the medical staff involved in the case and said it was "unlikely" for the surgeon to be the cause of the herpes infection found in both wo...

How Can HIV Affect the Tongue? - TheBody

Image
While anyone can experience problems related to the teeth and mouth, people with HIV more often experience these concerns, with anywhere from 32% to 46% of people living with HIV having at least one significant HIV-related oral health issue in their lifetime. These issues can potentially indicate underlying issues such as undiagnosed HIV infection, an unsuppressed viral load, or co-infection with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) like human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), or syphilis. Awareness is key—and if something feels "out of whack," it's a good prompt to seek help, according to Lina Rosengren-Hovee, M.D., M.P.H., an infectious disease specialist and assistant professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. "Any lesions in the mouth; any oral ulcers, patches of redness or soreness in the mouth or tongue; anything that persists for more than a few days: You need to be seen by a doctor," she said. How Does HIV Affect the...

Boils on Buttocks: Recurring Symptoms and Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
A boil on your buttocks can make everyday activities like sitting, walking, or even lying down painful. Bacteria, including staphylococcus aureus , often referred to as staph, are likely to blame. Here's everything you should know about how to treat a boil quickly and keep it from coming back.  SolStock / Getty Images Boils on Buttocks: Why They Form Boils are painful, pus-filled lesions on your skin. They develop when a hair follicle becomes infected and that infection travels deeper into your skin. Medically, boils are known as furuncles. A group of them together is called a carbuncle. Usually, the infection is caused by bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus and Group A Streptococcus (strep) . These bacteria naturally occur on the surface of the skin, but can cause infection if they get into your hair follicles.  Occasionally, boils are caused by fungus.  Boils are more likely to occur in a...

COVID, flu, RSV, cold, strep: What is everyone catching this winter? - USA TODAY

It's that time of year, again, when everyone appears to be getting sick – your family, your friends, your co-workers. Even your dog. In recent years, COVID-19 was the likely culprit behind your sniffles, cough and sore throat. But health experts say it's more of a toss-up this season between the coronavirus, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, and other cold viruses. "You can take your pick this year," said Dr. Steve Furr, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. "It varies in times of the year and what part of the country." Health officials fear the rise in infections will lead to increased hospitalizations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health advisory on Dec. 14 to medical caregivers saying that low vaccination rates against influenza, COVID-19 and RSV "could lead to more severe disease and increased health care capacity strain in the coming weeks." Experts say the best defense against develop...

Home Remedies for Herpes: 32 Oils, Herbs, and More - Healthline

We dug into the research around which home remedies for herpes might offer some relief and help you manage symptoms. Share on Pinterest About herpes The herpes simplex virus (HSV) results in an infection that can cause oral or genital herpes. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is the virus that typically causes oral herpes and is transmitted through contact with the sores and saliva. In some cases, oral sex can pass oral herpes to your genitals. Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is the virus that typically causes genital herpes. It's transmitted through sexual contact. Note that it can be transferred even when sores are not present. Both types of herpes are common, with nearly half of U.S. adults living with HSV-1, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that nearly 4 billion people are living with HSV-2 worldwide. For people with a herpes lesion outbreak, symptoms can be uncomfortable. Herpes simplex is a ...

Does at-home STI testing work? FDA clears first self-test for gonorrhea and chlamydia - NBC News

Image
The Food and Drug Administration's first-ever approval of an at-home test for chlamydia and gonorrhea could help drive earlier detection and treatment of these sexually transmitted infections amid a ballooning epidemic in the U.S. But some sexual health advocates worry that the FDA's proposal to begin stepping up regulation of over-the-counter self-testing of STIs could backfire. The need for new tools to combat these infections is dire. Diagnoses of gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis have soared in the past two decades. Public health experts argue that this is at least partially driven by woeful long-term flat funding of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's budget to fight the spread of STIs during this period. Some public health officials and advocates expect that greater FDA oversight will help legitimize home STI testing, making it easier to get insurance coverage and actually expanding its use. Other home tests for these three bacterial STIs are already avai...

Sunburned Lips: Treatment Options - Health.com

Image
Some body parts are more likely to get sunburned than others. For example, your lips are a particularly vulnerable spot for sunburns. Generally, sunburned lips become swollen, tender, and red. In some cases, blisters will form, similar to how blisters can form on sunburned skin on other body parts.  Most sunburns heal on their own. Still, taking pain relievers, applying cool compresses, or using topical creams, can help reduce pain, swelling, and redness. Consult a healthcare provider right away if you develop blisters with symptoms like fever, headache, or chills. Preventing sunburned lips can reduce your risk of skin cancer. Most skin cancers affecting the lips tend to be squamous cell carcinomas. The leading risk factor for skin cancer on the lips is exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. The lower lip has a higher risk of skin cancer than the upper lip since it is more exposed to the sun. Andrii Zorii/Getty Images Your lips...
