Man forced to have 'genital amputations' after contracting flesh-eating bacteria - The Mirror

Image
A man had to undergo "amputations in his genital area" after contracting a rare flesh eating bacterial infection and being left at "death's door". Double amputee Joshua Garrett, from Heber Springs, Arkansas, says he was forced to work two jobs to make ends meet after having "so much trouble" getting his disability support. In a fundraiser set up by Joshua , he explains this grueling work affected him badly. He wrote: "I overdid it working and contracted a rare flesh eating bacteria from a sore and developed a very rare form of gangrene that attacked my pelvic region." The infection required drastic medical care and Joshua had to undergo further amputations. He explained: "I had to have some amputations in my genital area. I will have to have several more surgeries for reconstruction and a couple of skin grafts. I was at death's door and was brought back." NCDHHS encourages mpox vaccination for those at higher risk - Iredell Free News

Image
Special to Iredell Free News RALEIGH — Two cases of mpox were reported to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services over the past six weeks, the first cases in North Carolina residents since April 2023. In addition to the two cases, mpox virus was recently detected in one out of 12 wastewater sites where monitoring is being conducted. These cases and wastewater detections were all in different counties, suggesting increased spread of mpox in North Carolina. "If you are at higher risk for mpox and haven't yet gotten the vaccine, now is a good time to do so," said Dr. Zack Moore, state epidemiologist. "Numbers of cases have been low recently thanks to vaccinations and engagement of partners in the LGBTQ+ community, but this is a reminder that mpox is still with us." NCDHHS is working closely with local health departments and community partners to provide education about mpox, encourage testing and improve vaccine access and uptake f...

A New Way to Prevent S.T.I.s: A Pill After Sex - The New York Times

Image
The News In a bid to stem the resurgence of sexually transmitted infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans to recommend doxycycline, a widely used antibiotic, for use after an unprotected sexual encounter. The antibiotic would be taken only by gay and bisexual men and transgender women who have had an S.T.I. within the previous year or who may be at risk for one. The scientific evidence is too limited to recommend the strategy, called doxy-PEP, to all people who might be exposed to infection-causing bacteria during sex. The agency released draft guidelines on Monday and plans to finalize them after a 45-day public comment period. "We need game-changing innovations to turn the S.T.I. epidemic around, and this is a major step in the right direction," an official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Rich Pedroncelli/Associated Press Why It Matters: Rates of S.T.I.s are skyrocketing. In 2021, there were 1.6 million cases of chlamydia, m...

Ingrown Hair vs. Herpes: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
Ingrown hairs and HSV 1 or 2 (herpes) have much in common. They look like red bumps in the genital or anal region, are filled with fluid, and can be painful. However, there are key differences between the two conditions. For example, ingrown hair cysts often appear singularly, whereas herpes blisters grow in clusters. This article discusses the similarities and differences between ingrown hairs and herpes. Evgen_Prozhyrko / Getty Images Symptoms From red bumps to inflammation and itching, ingrown hairs and herpes can often look and feel similar. Both conditions are painful and affect the genital or anal areas. Ingrown hairs have external pus-filled blisters that appear singularly and may have a dark mark or shadow in their center, indicating pubic hair growing under the skin. They typically clear up within a week. Herpes lesions can be internal and external, with fluid-filled blisters and sores that often occur in clusters. They do not...

Diagnostic value of high-risk HPV E6/E7 mRNA in patients with ... - BioMed Central

Image
In recent years, the onset age of cervical cancer has tended to be younger, so early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment are more important for improving the prognosis of patients. Epidemiological data show that the highest incidence age of cervical cancer in situ is 30–35 years old and that of invasive cancer is 45–55 years old, and its incidence tends to be younger than in the past [14]. The age distribution curve of HPV infection is U-shaped [15]. The infection rate is the highest in the age group ≤ 25 years old, followed by the age group > 55 years old. In contrast, the results of this study showed that the highest proportion of HPV E6/E7 mRNA-positive patients was 31–40 years old, the second highest was 41–50 years old, and the lowest was > 60 years old, which may be due to the differences in HPV infection rate and subtype distribution among different regions and nationalities. All of the subjects in this study were ASCUS patients, which is different from ...

Impact of cervical screening by human papillomavirus genotype ... - PLOS

Image
Abstract Background Cervical screening programs use testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes. Different HPV types differ greatly in prevalence and oncogenicity. We estimated the impact of cervical screening and follow-up for each HPV type. Methods and findings For each type of HPV, we calculated the number of women needed to screen (NNS) and number of women needing follow-up (NNF) to detect or prevent one cervical cancer case, using the following individual level input data (i) screening and cancer data for all women aged 25 to 80 years, resident in Sweden during 2004 to 2011 (N = 3,568,938); (ii) HPV type-specific prevalences and screening histories among women with cervical cancer in Sweden in 2002 to 2011(N = 4,254); (iii) HPV 16/18/other HPV prevalences in the population-based HPV screening program (N = 656,607); and (iv) exact HPV genotyping in a population-based cohort (n = 12,527). Historical screening attendance was associated with a 72% reduction of cer...
