Chicago's Austin community residents can get tested at no cost for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV until the end of this month. This is part of Loretto Hospital's initiative to increase awareness of preventing and treating sexually transmitted diseases during STD Awareness Month.  According to the Chicago Department of Public Health, in 2020 Chicago reached the lowest level of new HIV diagnoses since 1987 with just 627 cases. More than half of these diagnoses, 55%, affected non-Hispanic Black Chicagoans. Non-Hispanic Black Chicagoans also accounted for more than half of the new diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis.  Testing is an important step to reduce the spread of STIs and receiving medical treatment that can prevent complications and chronic diseases in the future, said Dr. Carlos Zambrano, chief medical officer for Loretto Hospital. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause sores in various places on the body. Blister-like lesions may appear in the genital area, anus, thighs, and buttocks. The virus enters the body through either a mucous membrane (like in the genitals) or an injury in the skin. When active, the virus uses nerve pathways to travel to the skin's surface, where it multiplies. This can result in sores and rashes in some people, but not everyone with genital herpes will experience symptoms. This article will discuss genital herpes, what it looks like, where sores are located, how it is diagnosed, other conditions that may be mistaken for genital herpes, and when to see a healthcare provider. nebari / Getty Images What Does Genital Herpes Look Like? Not everyone with genital herpes will have visible signs of the infection. Some people may acquire the virus and not even know it. In some people, lesions will form ...

Sexually Transmitted Disease Treatment and Vaccines Remain Underwhelming - Precision Vaccinations

Image
Houston (Precision Vaccinations) The U.S. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) National Strategic Plan includes, but is not limited to, vaccine and treatment research focused on chlamydia, gonorrhea, and Mpox. According to recent STI reports, additional clinical evaluations and research are needed for these diseases. For example, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced a report describing New York City patients with Mpox who developed new lesions after completing oral treatment. This CDC report suggests that post-treatment lesions might occur more commonly than previously reported. During the 2022 Mpox outbreak in the U.S., TPOXX® (tecovirimat), an antiviral medication approved for the treatment of smallpox, was used as an investigational treatment for severe mpox. However, efficacy and optimal treatment duration are still being investigated in 2023. All ten patients received outpatient treatment from the...

Family Physician Perspective Venis, who also serves as medical director of primary care at Damien Center, Indiana's oldest and largest AIDS service organization, called the increased rates of congenital syphilis "a devastating finding" and also expressed concern that a substantial percentage of men who have sex with men with reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis were also diagnosed with HIV. "As family physicians, we can improve our sexual health care practices simply by taking a proactive and comprehensive approach to STI screening, making sure to follow evidence-based recommendations from (the United States Preventive Services Task Force) and the CDC," Venis said. The USPSTF updated recommendations on screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea in 2021 and for syphilis in 2022. The data also indicated that rates for all reported STIs were substantially higher among individuals who identified as Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Na...

Asparagus: Brighten spring dishes - Mayo Clinic Health System

Image
Asparagus is a perennial flowering plant brought from Europe to North America hundreds of years ago. However, its history dates back to ancient Egypt, where images of it can be found on the walls of tombs. It originally grew wild along riverbanks or the seashore, preferring a soil too salty for other plants. The world's top producers of asparagus are China, Peru and Germany. Most of the asparagus grown in the U.S. comes from three states: California, Washington and Michigan. Asparagus can take up to three years to produce a crop. It's harvested in the spring, and one plant will continue to produce for about 15 years. Under perfect growing conditions, asparagus can grow up to 10 inches in 24 hours. Green is the most common color of asparagus, but white and purple have gained popularity. The white variety is picked before the spear breaks through the soil, so it's never exposed to the sun. Since it's only available for a few weeks, white asparagus is more expensive th...

My life changed when I found a blister, but I won't let virus define me' - Bristol Live

Image
A woman diagnosed with genital herpes after noticing a 'razor bump' blister has urged others 'not let STIs define them'. Suzanna Elzbieta, 38, was driving home from visiting her boyfriend and felt uncomfortable - as if a urinary tract infection (UTI) was coming on - in October 2019. Her doctor dismissed it as post-sex irritation, but she visited a women's health clinic who confirmed her worst fears - suspecting it was herpes. Suzanna was prescribed anti-viral medication, and, after a swab, it was revealed she had herpes simplex virus (HSV2) - a common virus the same as the cold sore virus. With her first flare up, Suzanna suffered with flu-like symptoms and blisters down below but now she only has 'mild' flare ups - a little bump appears every two to three months. She treats her symptoms with anti-viral medication. Despite the stigma, single Suzanna has continued to enjoy her dating life and has only been shunned once due to her STI status. She hopes to re...

This leads to sores and blisters in the mouth and oral region.  Herpes Simplex 2 virus causes genital herpes. This leads to sores, and blisters around the genitals, buttocks, inner thighs, and even the vagina.  How Does Herpes Spread? The herpes simplex viruses are contagious. HSV-1 and 2 spread if you come into direct contact with a herpes sore, saliva, or any other bodily secretions.  The skin on the genitals, mouth, and eyes is easily infected. If you touch a herpes sore and then touch your mouth or genitals without washing your hands, HSV may spread. HSV-2 spreads through sexual contact.
