How to Talk to Your Partner About STD Testing - Hackensack Meridian Health

Image
Few topics are more nerve-wracking to discuss with a new partner than sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). However, talking about STDs early in a relationship can be a huge benefit to both individuals' health. Talking about STDs can happen at any time, whether it's with your long-term partner, or a new hook-up.  The reason to bring up STDs? So that you and your partner can get tested before becoming sexually active. (For existing partners, testing after being sexually active is better than never.) Why test for STDs? Learning whether either of you has an STD may prevent the disease from spreading. As many STDs have silent symptoms, people may not know that they have them. "It's possible to have a STD for years without developing any signs or symptoms," says Infectious disease expert, Nazar Raoof, M.D.  "Partners may pass STDs to others unknowingly, without realizing that they have one." Cold sore under nose: Symptoms, causes, treatments, and more - Medical News Today

Image
Cold sores are skin lesions that often turn to tender blisters. Although there is no cure for the virus that causes them, cold sores will go away on their own over time, and various medicines can treat the symptoms. A cold sore under the nose is a common complaint. Cold sores are harmless and usually go away on their own within 1–2 weeks, but they can be bothersome. In this article, we explain what cold sores are and what causes them. We also look at possible complications and how to treat and prevent them. Cold sores consist of small lesions, or bumps, that appear on the skin. A person might notice a single sore or a cluster of them. They tend to develop on the face — typically around the mouth, on the lips, or underneath the nose. Cold sores usually start out as a discolored or white bump, which might resemble a pimple. The bump will usually develop into one or a group of tender, fluid-filled blisters. These might be red or darker than the surrounding skin, or they might be yellow or...

Shocking' Rise in STIs During COVID Alarms Health Workers - The Pew Charitable Trusts

In 2019, Columbus, Ohio, had seven reported cases of congenital syphilis, or cases in which a newborn child was infected during pregnancy. Two years later, that number rose to 20. And now? "Year to date, we've already seen 28 cases," said Dr. Mysheika Roberts, the city's health commissioner. One of this year's cases, she added, resulted in the death of a child. Cases of congenital syphilis in the United States climbed by a whopping 184% between 2017 and 2021, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But that's only one element of an explosive rise in sexually transmitted infections, known as STIs, which one expert in the field describes as an "out-of-control pandemic" that began in the 2010s and became super-charged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts in public health say COVID-19 contributed to the rise in sexually transmitted infections by preventing people from getting routine health care, where STI screenings c...

Image
Sept. 20, 2022 -- Some sexually transmitted diseases are spiking in the United States, with more syphilis cases reported last year any time since 1948, health officials say. Rates of syphilis infections soared 26% in 2021 over the prior year, reaching the highest rate of growth since 1996. New HIV cases rose 16% last year, as well. Now, with monkeypox on the scene, the situation is "out of control," David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, told the Associated Press. Experts say the increases could be due to lack of testing and prevention efforts, delayed diagnosis during the pandemic, drug and alcohol use, and the decline in condom use – plus a sex surge after COVID-19 lockdown. "It is imperative that we ... work to rebuild, innovate, and expand (STD) prevention in the U.S.," said Leandro Mena, MD, of the CDC said in a speech Sept. 19 at the 2022 STD Prevention Conference.
