Genital Herpes Women: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by two different but related forms of herpes simplex virus (HSV), known as HSV-1 and HSV-2. If you have genital herpes, you may experience outbreaks of painful sores or have symptoms that are so mild that you don't notice them. Up to one in five women have genital herpes, but most are unaware of their infection. The following is an overview of genital herpes in women, including symptoms, transmission, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Fuse / Getty Images Genital Herpes Symptoms in Women Genital herpes symptoms occur in outbreaks that come and go. The primary symptom is blisters that pop and become ulcers. When they first appear, they are usually small red bumps that can be subtle and easy to overlook. When the blisters pop, they can be very painful. Some people get a tingling or burning sensation where herpes sores are about to develop. This is called a prodrome , whi...

Iowan's lawsuit against Gardasil vaccine maker Merck joins others - Des Moines Register

Image
A former Johnston high school athlete who is now disabled has joined a growing number of plaintiffs in blaming a vaccine for his malady. Ethan Hartle filed suit June 17 against pharmaceutical giant Merck in Iowa federal court, alleging the company's Gardasil vaccine is to blame for the medical conditions that have left him "entirely dependent" on others for care. A former cross country runner and honor student, Hartle has neither walked nor stood since February 2019 and is largely bedridden, needing assistance even to sit upright, according to his complaint. Gardasil, which was approved for sale in 2006, is meant to block certain strains of human papillomavirus, or HPV, that can cause both sexually transmitted infections and a variety of cancers. Hartle received the vaccine as a 17-year-old high school student in July 2018, and was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and other disorders two months later. Hartle's lawsuit joins more than 30 Gardasil cases ...

Health Matters | News, Sports, Jobs - Marquette Mining Journal

Conway McLean, DPM, Journal columnist When any popular entertainment centers on some infectious disease, chances are good it's some epidemic (or even pandemic?). As we all know, movies are not reality. When it comes to infections in the real world, some of the most common everyday problems are due to a fungus. Most fungal organisms like a dark, moist environment, like your garden variety mushroom. And the inside of your shoe is a wonderful habitat. With the increasing temperatures of summer upon us, activity levels are rising as well. Moisture levels naturally rise, creating a wonderful place for fungus. These are opportunistic infections, and are out and about, simply part of our environment. To flourish, they simply need the right opportunity. A closed-toe shoe, a sweaty foot, a shoe material that doesn't breathe, all these are part of the complex equation leading to the development of a fungal infection of the foot....

Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI), with more than half a million new cases in the United States annually. The infection can be caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 can cause sores on the mouth (cold sores) and genitals. HSV-2 only causes genital herpes. This article will explore the symptoms of herpes infection and when these symptoms warrant a visit to a healthcare provider. You will also learn how it is transmitted and what can happen when infections go untreated. Pornpak Khunatorn / Getty Images Types of Herpes Herpes viruses make up a large family of viruses, but there are only two types of herpes simplex viruses: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is the type that can cause cold sores on the mouth or open sores on the genitals or anal area. It is spread primarily through oral contact. HSV-2 only causes genital sores but can be transmitted by oral, genital, or anal contact. The...

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome: What Is It? - WebMD

Image
Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a condition that can bring on weakness or paralysis in your face and a rash that affects your ear. Your doctor might also call it herpes zoster oticus. Anyone who's had chickenpox can get RHS. But Ramsay Hunt syndrome is rare. About 5 out of every 100,000 people in the U.S. get it each year. Fast treatment is key. The sooner your doctor gets you medicine for RHS, the better your chances are for a good recovery. What Causes RHS? The varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles, brings on Ramsay Hunt syndrome. After you recover from chickenpox as a child, the virus turns "off," or becomes inactive. But it stays in your body, and it could become active again years and years later. Experts aren't sure why. If the virus flares up, it can attack the nerves that affect movement and feeling in your face. It can also set off shingles in adults. What Are the Risk Factors? Your chances of getting RHS go up if you've...

Bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes infect the outer layers of the skin, called the epidermis. The face, arms, and legs are most often affected. Anyone can get impetigo, but it most commonly affects children, especially those ages 2 to 5. The infection often begins in minor cuts, insect bites, or a rash such as eczema — any place where the skin is broken. But it can also occur on healthy skin. It's called primary impetigo when it infects healthy skin and secondary impetigo when it occurs in broken skin. It isn't always easy or necessary to make this distinction. Impetigo is an old disease. The name dates back to 14th-century England and comes from the Latin word impetere, meaning "to attack." Bacteria thrive in hot, moist conditions. So, imp...

Warning as mysterious STI strikes up to 1 in 16 women often with no warning signs - New York Post

Image
Experts are warning women of a stealthy STI that is often missed but strikes one in 16 in some parts of the United Kingdom. Trichomoniasis is more common than the well-known STI gonorrhea, experts found. But not only is it relatively unheard of, it is not always included in standard STI "checkups" at sexual health clinics or at-home kits. The NHS says to see a GP or sexual health clinic if you have symptoms of the illness, with both men and women affected. However around half of those with it do not show any signs, and are able to spread it further. Others may be mystified by their symptoms, which can be vague. New research suggests that many women are carrying trichomoniasis without realizing – up to one in 16 women in some areas. And it is disproportionately affecting women from racial minorities and those in deprived communities. Dr. John White, Medical Director at Preventx and Consultant Physicia...

Ask the Doctor: ‘I’ve broken out in very painful cold sores. Is this a symptom of long Covid?’ - image.ie

Image
"I've had Covid more than one time and still feel the effects of it months later, but after the most recent time, I started developing severe cold sores around my mouth. It started off as just general dryness and peeling, but then my lips began swelling and the itchiness set in. I've never suffered from cold sores before and haven't changed anything in my routine that would explain how I got them. Is this a symptom of long Covid?" Professor Seamus Linnane Answer from Professor Seamus Linnane, deputy medical director of the Beacon Hospital and consultant in respiratory & general internal medicine. So many people have had Covid-19 at this stage that it is becoming increasingly difficult to separate long Covid symptoms from other illnesses. We have repeatedly seen patients attending our service with new symptoms after a Covid infection that turn out to be a separate disease altogether. The WHO recognises this problem and defines long Covid as symptoms t...

The virus is passed during intimate sexual contact prior to and following the outbreak of ulcers. Herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) is a related virus more commonly linked to oral herpes (a.k.a. cold sores). Even so, HSV-1 can sometimes be passed to the genitals during oral sex. Pornpak Khunatorn / Getty Images Although HSV-2 accounts for most genital herpes outbreaks, it is impossible to tell which virus caused the infection without lab tests.
