Herpes is a common viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes simplex virus: type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 mainly affects the oral area and is called oral herpes or herpes simplex labialis.
