The term microbiome refers to the billions of bacteria living in and on your body that help keep you healthy. The gut microbiome is one type, and your skin is home to a microbiome as well. This is known as your skin flora, a collection of organisms like bacteria and fungi. Your skin microbiome includes a yeast called Candida . This fungal organism lives on the skin of healthy individuals. But when its growth becomes too rapid, it can cause a fungal rash on the face.  A skin infection caused by Candida is known as candidiasis or a yeast infection. Candidiasis most often occurs in moist areas of the body, like the groin or armpits. But this fungal rash can also show up on the face, including the forehead, nose, and corners of the mouth. People with other skin conditions like psoriasis are at higher risk of having a fungal infection on their faces. Sometimes the infection can be mistaken for psoriasis. VERRUCAS can be unsightly and painful for anyone unfortunate enough to have developed one. Updated Screening Guidelines for 5 Cancer Types - Clinical Advisor

Image
Cancer is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality worldwide and is the second leading cause of death in the United States. 1,2 The National Cancer Institute projects an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases and more than 600,000 cancer-related deaths during 2021 (Table 1). 2 Approximately 39% of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetime, with the median age at diagnosis of 66 years. 2 Cancers with the highest incidence and overall mortality include cancers of the female breast, prostate, lung, and colon. 2 Progress has been made to decrease cancer incidence and increase cancer survival. Much of this progress can be linked to decreases in tobacco use as well as implementation of cancer screening programs. 3-5 Table 1. Cracked skin could simply be dry skin on the hands, heels of the feet, or lips that needs additional hydration and moisture. However, cracked skin could also be a sign of an infection or even something more. Read about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of cracked skin.  Catherine Falls Commercial / Getty Images Causes and Symptoms of Cracked Skin When skin becomes dry, it's more likely to crack, peel, flake, and become irritated. Depending on the cause of cracked skin, you may notice some other symptoms. Gonorrhea and syphilis cases spiking in Canton - Canton Repository

Image
CANTON – Gonorrhea cases are spiking in Canton. So is syphilis. And it's unclear why. Canton City Public Health reports that the number of gonorrhea cases jumped last year to 507 — well above the five-year average of 396. Meanwhile, there were 21 cases of syphilis and 21 cases of HIV detected last year. That is around the average number of HIV cases in the past five years but reflects a rising trend in syphilis cases. The five-year average for syphilis is 15, but prior to 2015, roughly zero to two cases of syphilis were reported each year in the city. Health officials cautioned that the numbers likely are even higher. Laboratories and doctor's offices can sometimes be slow to submit their data, so the case counts could rise in the coming months. The numbers also count only the infections that were tested. Sexually transmitted diseases, often referred to as sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, often go unreported. Medica...

Natick company develops test to detect head and neck cancer that could lead to earlier diagnosis - Boston Herald

Image
A saliva-based diagnostic test that can detect HPV-related head and neck cancer has the potential to catch the disease earlier and even serve as a standard screening method, which the medical community currently lacks. Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer caused by human papillomavirus that develops in the mouth and throat, is expected to cause more than 10,000 deaths this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Cases have been increasing significantly in men in recent years. But there is no screening method for this cancer right now, said Charlotte Kuperwasser, chief of clinical operations at Natick-based diagnostics company Naveris. She said most men who contract it will notice a lump in their throat and go to the doctor. But by that time, the cancer could be quite advanced. The new saliva test developed by Naveris has been shown to detect HPV-associated head and neck cancer with high accuracy, which is a first-of-its-kind study result and could offer a patient...

Men get HPV cancers too, and cases are rising - DW (English)

Image
Much is said about human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer in women but less is heard about it in men. The vaccine is gender-neutral, but cases in men are rising. In 2014, Jason Mendelsohn was preparing for the worst. He recorded videos for his children, said goodbye and reminded them about what was important in life. Mendelsohn was 44 at the time. He had been diagnosed with stage 4 tonsil cancer, caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection — possibly decades earlier. One day, Mendelsohn just found a lump on his neck. He had had no previous symptoms. Doctors removed his tonsils and 42 lymph nodes. Then he had seven weeks of chemotherapy, radiation and being fed through a tube. "I'd never heard of tongue, throat and tonsil cancer, nor had I known anyone to ever be diagnosed with it," Mendelsohn told DW. His doctors said he most likely contracted HPV while performing oral sex. They said the HPV infection could have been as far back as 20 years earlier...
