Frank Bures: HPV vaccinations can save lives | Column - Winona Daily News Frank Bures: HPV vaccinations can save lives | Column - Winona Daily News Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:00 PM PDT An article appeared in the Center for Disease Control's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly publication assessing the incidence of human papilloma virus or wart virus linked to or associated with the nine-strain HPV vaccine given to prevent infections from the viruses. Two of the strains, 16 and 18, are responsible for 70-75% of all female cervical cancers. These and other strains can infect exposed cells during contact, become incorporated into the cell's make-up and cause cancer after a years' long latent period. The cancers induced by HPV include cervical, vagina, external female genitalia, penile, anal, and oropharyngeal (mouth and throat). Researchers extracted these cases from U.S. Cancer Statistics registries during the years ...

Transcriptome-Based HPV Assay Shows Correlation With High-Grade Cytology - 360Dx Transcriptome-Based HPV Assay Shows Correlation With High-Grade Cytology - 360Dx Posted: 30 Aug 2019 07:15 AM PDT NEW YORK – Colposcopies and cervical biopsies can be intimidating, as well as painful and costly, but are often the best way for detecting cervical cancer or precancerous cervical lesions because less invasive diagnostic methods aren't as accurate or predictive.  But researchers in France have developed a sequencing-based test that detects transcription levels of certain genes in high-risk human papillomavirus subtypes, and preliminary evaluations suggest it might someday serve as a surrogate for pathology and reduce unnecessary testing. HEALTH MATTERS | Doctors urge cancer vaccine for kids - TribDem.com HEALTH MATTERS | Doctors urge cancer vaccine for kids - TribDem.com Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:45 PM PDT There is a vaccine proven effective in preventing several deadly types of cancer, but barely half of the children in the United States are getting the protection. The human papillomavirus causes about 90% of cervical cancer in women, and is also linked to throat cancer and other malignancies in men and women. Since 2006, vaccines against the virus have been available. Children can be immunized against the most dangerous HPV strains beginning at age 9. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all boys and girls be vaccinated by age 12. Full protection requires two shots, usually within six months to a year. "It's the first vaccine that has been offered to us that fights cancer," Dr. Ed Pawlowski said from Pediatric Care...

HPV vaccine is to prevent cancer, not STDs - San Antonio Express-News HPV vaccine is to prevent cancer, not STDs - San Antonio Express-News Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:00 AM PDT What if you could take a medicine that prevents cancer? Most of us already have. In 1982, the Federal Drug Administration approved the first medicine to prevent cancer, the hepatitis B vaccine. Many people don't realize that viruses can lead to cancer. Or that vaccines are a medicine that must be taken before being exposed to such a virus. Because children are vaccinated, rates of liver cancer have dropped fourfold in the United States. In 2006, the FDA approved a second medicine to prevent cancer, the human papillomavirus vaccine. HPV infects almost 15 million Americans every year, many more than hepatitis B. Most of us will be infected with this virus at some point in our lives, and this year HPV will lead to cancer in more than 33,000 Americans. The best way to pre...
